Saung Budaya Dance

Saung Budaya Indonesian Dance Group was established in 2005 when dance instructor Amalia Suryani came to New York City and held dance workshops in the Indonesian Consulate. Our goal is to introduce Indonesian culture through dance and music to the Indonesian-American youths in New York City and more generally, to the wider public.

Throughout the years, Saung Budaya has grown to become a vital part of the Indonesian community culture in New York. A variety of dances from all over the Indonesian Archipelago are taught within the group who have performed around in the East Coast / Tri-State Area. Saung Budaya currently consists of 20 dancers whom are mostly students and young professionals.

Come celebrate our 20th Anniversary show! 🥳 KulturAksi: NY Indonesian Art Fest on Friday June 5th and Saturday June 6th (link in bio for tix) KulturAksi raises awareness of Indonesia’s environment through various art forms under one roof. Presented by Amalia Suryani, and in celebration of Saung Budaya’s 20th anniversary, we are proud to present KulturAksi: NY Indonesian Art Fest, an immersive show that brings various forms of Indonesian art together under one roof. This milestone event serves as a platform for local, New York-based Indonesian artists to showcase the archipelago’s rich heritage through music, dance, visual arts, culinary traditions, and literature. The festival’s tagline, KulturAksi, was chosen to highlight the intersection of art, culture, and advocacy through action. For this year’s theme, we aim to leverage creative expression to address global environmental challenges—an issue of increasing urgency worldwide—and inspire meaningful action within our community and beyond. #saungbudayanyc #saungbudaya #nycdancers #newyorkart #dancelife

The dancers from Saung Budaya have worked tirelessly to bring Ta’na Nirau to life. ✨ Catch Saung Budaya’s Ta’na Nirau performance on Fri (June 5th) from 7–8 PM and Sat (June 6th) from 7–8 PM! This is definitely a performance you won’t want to miss... it’s powerful, moving, and unforgettable. Rooted in the dance, music, and storytelling traditions of the Dayak tribes of Borneo, Indonesia, Ta’na Nirau highlights the urgent struggles Indigenous communities face against environmental destruction, land theft, illegal logging, and the expansion of palm oil plantations. As forests continue to disappear due to unchecked greed, this performance gives voice to the resistance fighting to restore and protect their ancestral lands. 🌿 “Amalia and Saung Budaya are ambassadors of Indonesian culture. She has been educating and promoting Indonesian culture for the last 20 years.” - VOA Indonesia #dance #pesonaindonesia #newyorkart
Celebrating 20 years of dance and culture ✨ In this series, we’re sharing some of the incredible dances we’ve performed over the years. In today’s video, we’re featuring: 1. Kalimantan Dance: Movements range from slow and graceful (inspired by the hornbill) to energetic and powerful, like traditional war dances. 2. Saman Dance: A mesmerizing performance where rhythm is created entirely by the dancers through clapping, chest and thigh slaps, and finger snaps. Which dances would you like us to share next? Let us know in the comments 👇
